Feather or nylon shuttlecocks — which to buy

The choice is mostly between flight quality and how long a shuttle survives.

Feather

Better flight and a sharper deceleration at the end of the shot, which is what competitive play is scored around. They also break — a hard smash can finish one in a single rally. Feather shuttles need reasonable humidity; a very dry room makes feathers brittle.

Nylon

Far more durable and much cheaper per hour of play. Flight is flatter and faster through the mid-court, which some players like and others do not. Nylon is the sensible choice for practice, casual games and outdoor play.

Speed markings

Shuttles come in speeds suited to temperature and altitude. In most Indian indoor halls a medium speed works; hotter, higher venues need a slower shuttle to keep length.

Storing them

Keep shuttles in their tube, upright, away from heat. For feather shuttles, a slightly humid cupboard extends life noticeably.
